Building Generative AI Tools for Language Teaching

As Generative AI becomes increasingly integrated into our professional and personal lives, the Generative AI Literacy level of the general population has also increased. However, many users still use GenAI chat windows to simply generate materials, ask for ideas, or request feedback through prompting.  But each of these platforms offer far more than simple prompts: connectors and extensions add more capabilities, and application programming interfaces (APIs) can allow language educators to move from prompting to building. Realizing this potential requires a new layer of AI literacy which involves knowing what these tools can do beyond a basic prompt, and how to access them directly. 

This course is designed as the next step for language instructors ready to go beyond prompting. Participants will take a hands-on tour of the advanced features and extensions available across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, then learn how to access these platforms’ APIs directly. We will explore the documentation, create an account and API key, and build simple applications. No prior coding experience is required. In the final module, participants will design, build, and deploy their own GenAI-powered teaching tools including a task-based conversation partner or an automated feedback tool. We will conclude by putting each one online so students or colleagues can actually use it. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped not just to use generative AI, but to build and share tools with it. 

Course goals

  • Go beyond basic prompting to understand the advanced features, extensions, and capabilities of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini for language teaching 
  • Understand what an API is, how it differs from a chat interface, and where to find and evaluate each major provider’s API offerings 
  • Create and safely manage API access to build custom, purpose-built language-teaching tools 
  • Design and build functional GenAI-powered applications such as task-based conversation partners and automated feedback tools 
  • Deploy a GenAI-powered tool so it can be used by students or colleagues beyond your own computer 
  • Critically evaluate the pedagogical, ethical, and practical implications of teacher-built AI tools in language education 

Course Details

  •  Length: 3 weeks
  • Delivery: online, largely asynchronous
  • Small, seminar-style cohort-focused curriculum similar to what you’d find in a graduate course, with extensive and personalized instructor feedback and interaction
  • Weekly expected workload: 5-7 hours + 1-2 hours of synchronous sessions (TBD)
  • Learning Platform: D2L (MSU’s Learning Management System)
  • No required materials other than those provided within the learning platform
  • Technology Requirements: computer with stable internet connection; webcam and microphone; mobile device (recommended)
  • Not for credit; a certificate will be provided to participants upon successful completion of the course.
  • Please note: we reserve the right to cancel or postpone a course session if the minimum enrollment number is not met.
